Poured Out

Scripture: Matthew 26:6-13, John 12:1-8

This week is Holy Week – Sunday, the people welcomed Jesus with loving, open arms, waving palm branches. On Monday, Jesus overturned tables. Tuesday, Jesus was met with challenging questions from the religious leaders to try and trick and discredit Him. One of those questions was about a widow. Today, Wednesday, a woman shows how much Jesus means to her by pouring out a year’s worth of wages.

John 12:1-8 “Six days before the Passover Feast, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus lived. (Lazarus is the man Jesus raised from the dead.) 2 There they had a dinner for Jesus. Martha served the food, and Lazarus was one of the people eating with Jesus. 3 Mary brought in a pint of very expensive perfume made from pure nard. She poured the perfume on Jesus’ feet, and then she wiped his feet with her hair. And the sweet smell from the perfume filled the whole house.

4 Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ followers who would later turn against him, was there. Judas said, 5 “This perfume was worth an entire year’s wages. Why wasn’t it sold and the money given to the poor?” 6 But Judas did not really care about the poor; he said this because he was a thief. He was the one who kept the money box, and he often stole from it.

7 Jesus answered, “Leave her alone. It was right for her to save this perfume for today, the day for me to be prepared for burial. 8 You will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.”

My daughter's name is Myra, meaning poured out. This name came about as we had multiple complications with her pregnancy and poured out many prayers for her. Our hearts never stopped pouring out prayers as we continued to receive more bad news during her pregnancy. We never stopped because our heart was filled with hope. Hope, that Jesus could change the bad news to good news. Jesus was and is powerful enough to protect our daughter in my womb.

When something is valuable to us, we take time to invest in it. Whether it is a significant other, children, a job, fitness, or hobbies, if it is valuable to us, we will pour time, money, and energy into it. Mary saw the value of Jesus and poured out her time, money and energy.

  1. Mary gave her time to be with Jesus. She set aside doing chores and took that time to learn from Jesus.

  2. Mary spent money, a year’s worth of wages, on the perfume she would pour out on Jesus.

  3. Mary gave her energy, Mark 14: 3-9 “...done what she could...” She did what was asked of her, no matter what people thought and not based on what others did.

My focus should be pouring out all I am for Jesus. What do you value in your life? Take a look at what you are spending time, money, and energy on. Is Jesus on that list?

Challenge: Take time today to look at your daily routines. Write down how you spend time, money, and energy? Then write down how you pour out more of your daily routine to Jesus? Can you add spending time reading your Bible, praying, giving money or resources to others in need, or focusing your thoughts and heart on Jesus?

Prayer: Jesus you are King, Lord of All. Help me see how valuable you are and forgive me for not putting you first in my life. Thank you for helping me see where I can change my prioritize and pour out more of my life for you.
