All I Need

Scripture: Psalm 23

One of the most famous chapters in the Bible begins as “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need...” I grew up learning about how Jesus is my shepherd and how that applies today. I know that as my Shepherd, Jesus is going to guide, protect, and care for me. Being a mom, I understand this idea a little more. I am going to do my best to guide, protect, and care for my kids.

Recently when I read this chapter the second sentence in verse 1 resonated in my heart “...I have all that I need.” My children are too little to fully take care of themselves, even though I often hear “I do it mommy” or “I don’t need your help”. Yet, daily I help them dress, go potty, provide food...this list of physical needs keeps going. But I also strive to meet their emotional and spiritual needs by loving, teaching, and praying over them. I often have to remind my oldest that he doesn’t need more. That his 3rd snack between lunch and dinner is not a need. That the toy his friend has isn’t a need but a want.

Psalm 23:1 ”The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” With Jesus as my shepherd, I have all that I need. He is all that I need. Often when my comfort, security, and safety are shaken I feel like my needs are not met. It’s easy to forget that Jesus is all that I need. In our Western culture, we are often told to taste and see that the world is good. That the world...money, hobbies, jobs, comfort, security...is where you will find what you need. But we are to “Taste and see that the Lord is good...” Psalm 34:8. This is where we will truly find all that we need.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus for being all that we need. Please forgive me for the areas in my life that I fill with worldly things rather than you. Help me seek you first in all my needs.
