Being A Servant

Scripture: Philippians 2:1-11

Raise your hand if you’ve been anxious lately… (Props to you if you actually raised your hand while reading this) If you are someone who struggles with anxiety, like myself, you might be having a ridiculously hard time trying to cope with what is happening around the world.

It’s been easy for me to get stressed and worried about how my husband and I are going to provide for ourselves if he loses his job, how we will take care of family that lives far away if they get sick or even how we are going to refill our basic necessities at home once we run out.

The enemy makes it easy for us to worry when we are focused on the possible things that we might encounter.

While I was at Coborn’s yesterday getting groceries for dinner I realized I was getting really anxious walking through the aisles and realizing many of the things that I wanted were completely gone from the shelves, even the Mac & Cheese. As I was starting to get frustrated about this flood of stress pouring out of me a sweet older woman came up behind me and said “It looks like people are preparing for the second coming aren’t they, honey?” I simply smiled and replied with “Honestly, it wouldn’t be so bad to see Jesus right now.” She turned back to me while handing me the last box of Mac & Cheese and said with confidence “I’ve been seeing Jesus a lot over the past week in the people around me, it’s been fun for a lady of my age to watch people come together and actually act like Jesus for a change.”

Not only was this incredible woman oozing Gods truth, but she also gave me Frozen 2 Mac & Cheese, what a day…

This conversation that I had yesterday reminded of Philippians 2 and reminded me that during times such as these we must imitate Jesus every day. We must be humble and selfless as Jesus is and practice being true servants to others. I believe that God is pulling us all into a season of selflessness and servanthood more than ever. He is reminding us that when we lay ourselves down for others we are ultimately honoring Him, and what better time to do that than right in the midst of a pandemic.

By being others focused like Jesus we can live in the freedom that God has promised for us and not in the anxiety and fear that the enemy wants to trap us in. We want to look like Jesus and this is time to learn how.

Prayer: Heavenly Father we thank you for who you are and how you love me. Please show me how I can use the gifts and talents that you’ve given me during this crazy time in the world to reach more people in your name. Help me to love others as you do and show Jesus to everyone during a time when people need to see the hope that comes from having a relationship with you the most. I love you and trust in you. Amen.
